Happy New Year! It seems late to be passing that on. What’s the cut off for that anyways? Happy New Year definitely can’t be used the entire month of January as a greeting, but is it already passé to be using it on the 5th? Either way, I’m using it and wishing all of you a Happy New Year. I hope that 2014 brings exciting new things to your life and of course to your home. Maybe this is the year you decide to tackle some of those spaces in your home that have been bothering you for a while, the colour, the disorganization, the layout? Whatever it is, maybe this is the year!? How exciting for you!
It feels like I haven’t blogged for ages and actually it has been quite some time since I sat down and put fingers to keyboard. I guess the holidays are busier and more overwhelming than I actually ever realized. We have been swamped (in a good way) with family gatherings, holiday soirees and parties, birthdays and outings. This is the first weekend in a long time that we haven’t had anything planned and today was the first day that I haven’t done 5 loads of laundry and 100 other things. It’s nice to just sit. I figured, if I’m sitting, I may as well be typing and so here I am.
Today I am especially inspired by the DIYer, or those who Do It Themselves, the DITs? I recently discovered on HGTV the show I brake for yard sales, which stars Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer. She is a self-proclaimed DIYer or DIT and loves yard sales, flea markets and second-hand shops. I love the idea of taking relics that no one seems to want and creating something new and unique for your home. This summer I refinished a bedroom suite (well, the bed and one side table) from my youth. It was a pine sleigh bed and I love the lines of the bed frame, but pine just wasn’t cutting it for me anymore. I hauled it all outside and began a week’s worth of sanding, staining and painting. It really was a learning experience for me. I am not what you would call a DIYer at all. I don’t really love sitting at home painting and redoing old things, I love the idea of it, but when it comes to actually doing it, I’m not so into that part. The end result turned out fantastic. We bought new hardware from Anthropologie and a new duvet cover from Target, and our spare bedroom went from mid-90’s to 2013.
So…since I’m not a huge DIYer, but dream of becoming one, I have put together a list of blogs that inspire me in the area of DIY projects.
Go, and read, you’ll be amazed. Their blogs are spectacular (makes me want to do more), and their ideas are great. Some of their projects are easy, some a little more challenging, but make this year your year to try new things, it’s definitely my goal for 2014!
